Where Learning Feels Like Home

At Westlawn School, environment is not an afterthought. It is foundational to how students learn, grow, and thrive. From the very beginning, we recognized that physical spaces shape how students feel, engage, and grow. Our goal is to create environments that feel warm, inviting, and homelike, places where students feel safe to take risks, build confidence, and be themselves.

We look beyond traditional classroom settings to offer thoughtfully designed indoor and outdoor spaces that support curiosity, connection, and whole-child learning.

A deep understanding of the role nature plays in education guides our approach to learning. Time spent outdoors supports physical health, emotional regulation, and mental well-being, while encouraging curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving. Natural environments engage students in rich, multisensory experiences that deepen learning and foster meaningful connections to the world around them. Through regular interaction with nature, students develop resilience, environmental awareness, and a sense of responsibility, growing as confident, grounded learners.

CLASSROOM SETTINGS

Indoor Learning Spaces

Westlawn’s indoor spaces are intentionally designed to feel calm, welcoming, and personal. Small class sizes, natural light, flexible seating, and multisensory materials support a wide range of learning styles while fostering focus and meaningful collaboration.

Rather than feeling institutional, our classrooms are designed to feel like an extension of home, helping students feel grounded, supported, and ready to learn.

OUTDOOR LEARNING

Westlawn Woods

Outdoor learning is a vital part of holistic education. It promotes physical activity, mental well-being, creativity, and environmental stewardship while engaging students in a dynamic, multisensory setting.

Westlawn Woods is a one-acre outdoor exploration area located entirely on our school property. It offers students space to explore, collaborate, and connect with the natural world. We are excited to be expanding this space with the addition of our Learning Lab and Gathering Grounds, two new areas designed to deepen opportunities for outdoor learning, play, and creative expression.

Westlawn Woods is becoming a sanctuary for our students, a place to learn and play, to imagine and collaborate, and to grow.

LEARN BY DOING

Experiential Learning

Experiential learning is woven into daily life at Westlawn. Our one-acre Westlawn Woods serves as a living classroom where students engage directly with the natural world through hands-on experiences. From caring for chickens and learning responsibility and emotional regulation, to creating a pollinator garden that teaches the importance of insects in our ecosystem, students learn by doing. Outdoor movement, survival skills, and agricultural learning further connect physical activity with real-world problem-solving, fostering confidence, independence, and a deeper sense of stewardship for the environment.
