What Is 2e?

Exceptional Minds Learn Differently

Twice-exceptional (2e) students are children who have average to above-average intelligence or giftedness alongside learning, emotional, or neurodevelopmental differences. These students often thrive intellectually but may struggle in traditional school environments that are not designed to meet both their strengths and their challenges.

At Westlawn School, we specialize in educating 2e learners by honoring the whole child—how they think, learn, feel, and engage with the world. Our students are curious, capable, and creative, but they may need more intentional support, patience, and flexibility to reach their full potential.

SUPPORT

How We Support 2e Learners

Westlawn provides a mastery-based, individualized learning environment where students are met exactly where they are. Instruction is hands-on, task-oriented, and paced to each learner, with clear goals and multiple ways to demonstrate understanding. Through personalized learner profiles, we maintain high expectations while ensuring the right supports are in place.

Our curriculum challenges students academically while also nurturing social-emotional growth. Special interests are woven into learning through Studios, Field Experiences, and project-based work, helping students connect their strengths to real-world learning and build confidence and independence.

With a 4:1 student-to-teacher ratio, a co-teaching model, and individualized services, Westlawn offers a safe, supportive community for students who may feel misunderstood or unsuccessful elsewhere. We emphasize critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, and intentionality, all grounded in strong, trusting relationships.

Nurturing Twice-Exceptional Minds: The Power of Outdoor Learning

Twice-exceptional (2e) learners, those who are both gifted and have learning differences, often face unique challenges in traditional educational settings. These bright minds may struggle with sensory processing, attention, or social interactions while simultaneously demonstrating exceptional abilities in specific areas. For 2e students, the great outdoors can be a powerful ally in their educational journey, offering a multitude of benefits that address their unique needs and strengths.

Mastery Learning: My Vision for Transformative Education

Our approach at Westlawn isn’t just an educational strategy—it’s a philosophy of human potential. I’ve dedicated my career to understanding how students truly learn, and what I’ve discovered is that every child has an extraordinary capacity for growth when given the right support. Mastery learning isn’t about moving students through a predetermined curriculum; it’s about ensuring they genuinely understand and can apply what they’re learning.
